Seasonal Versus Evergreen Copy

This time of year I get asked about Christmas & New Year ads on Facebook/Instagram. This raises the questions of whether you should do seasonal or evergreen ads.

Seasonal advertising is specific to a time of the year or an event, for example: Thanksgiving, New Years, Valentine’s Day, Spring, etc. The pros are:

  • Gives people a reason to sign up. While we know that you should exercise and take care of your health, sometimes people need an extra push. This is why you see more people sign up for gyms at the start of the month, as they’ve realised another few weeks have gone by without doing anything for their bodies.
  • The ads look fresh. People tune out things the more often they see it, call it creative fatigue or familiarity blindness. When the creative changes from “Fitness” to “Christmas” your audience may look on it with fresh eyes.

The downside of seasonal advertising is that it tends to only work for a very limited window, usually only 1-2 weeks, 4 if you’re very lucky. Once the end of September rolls around, it’s hard to use “Back To School. Back To Fitness” as a reason to get started. At that stage you’re better of saying “Get Lean For Halloween”

Evergreen creatives are ads that don’t tie to a particular season, classics such as “Limited Opportunity” or “We’re looking for 5 busy men who want to lose the dad bod.” Depending on your market, these can continue to work for months and years.

The answer is to use both, as we can’t predict which image, text, and headline will resonate with your audience at any particular moment.
